The place

What is Why Nam Villa?

A handmade wooden one-bedroom villa in the jungle above Why Nam beach on Koh Phangan, Thailand. It has a king bed, two private pools, hammocks, a deck, a full kitchen, solar power and views over the bay and ocean. Guests have the entire villa and grounds to themselves.

Is it Why Nam or Wai Nam?

Both spellings are used. The beach is usually written Why Nam, and some guests and maps write Wai Nam. Haad Thien is also spelled Haad Thian. It is the same place on the south coast of Koh Phangan, near Haad Rin.

How many people does it sleep?

Two adults, in one king-size bed.

Is there a private pool?

Yes. The villa has private pools set into the rock on the cliff edge with views over the jungle and coastline. They are filled with water from a nearby waterfall, so after recent rain the water may not be completely clear, but it is always fresh and clean.

Is it a treehouse?

Not literally. It is a handmade wooden villa built into the jungle hillside among the trees, and Airbnb lists the property type as a treehouse. Expect natural materials, a thatched roof, open views and plenty of greenery rather than a conventional hotel room.

Is the villa eco-friendly and off-grid?

It is solar powered, and its fresh water comes from a nearby jungle stream, filtered through a six-stage reverse osmosis system. You still get hot showers. See our eco villa page.

Is there a kitchen?

Yes, a full kitchen with oven, cooker, fridge, freezer, blender, crockery, cutlery and cooking basics. The nearest mini-mart is about a 10 minute walk away and food can be delivered from restaurants on the three beaches, but you can also bring groceries.

Are there animals or insects?

A couple of friendly geckos share the villa and keep the mosquitoes down. It is the jungle, so keep food sealed because monkeys can be curious, but there is nothing to be afraid of. The bed has a mosquito net.

What is the walk up to the villa like?

Our staff meet you at the boat and carry all your luggage, and any food deliveries, up to the villa and back down again. The way up is a short jungle path of about 5 minutes, uphill in places and uneven underfoot, so it is not step-free: wear sturdy shoes or sandals. If you have limited mobility, message us before you book.

Is the villa cleaned during my stay?

Yes. Daily cleaning and on-hand maintenance are included.

How is the villa kept cool?

Ceiling fans and portable fans keep the air moving, and the breeze from the sea and jungle does the rest. The villa does not have air conditioning.

Are there mosquito nets?

Yes. The king bed has a mosquito net.

Are there hot showers?

Yes, the villa has hot water.

Is the villa on the beach?

It is on the hillside above Why Nam beach, a 5 minute walk from Why Nam and Haad Thien beaches along a jungle path.
