How to get to Why Nam beach, step by step

From the airport or ferry to your door: the full route to Why Nam Villa on Koh Phangan.

To get to Why Nam beach, travel to Koh Phangan by ferry (usually to Thong Sala), go on to Haad Rin, then take a taxi boat of about 10 to 15 minutes to Why Nam beach. Our staff meet you on the beach and carry your bags up the 5 minute jungle path to Why Nam Villa. The boat costs 500 baht per person each way, paid in cash.

The route in five steps

  1. Reach the Gulf of Thailand islands. Fly to Koh Samui or Surat Thani, which both have airports, or arrive on Koh Tao by ferry.
  2. Ferry to Koh Phangan. Ferries run from Koh Samui, Koh Tao and Surat Thani. Most arrive at Thong Sala, and some services run to Haad Rin. Check the current timetable and book on a site such as 12Go.
  3. Go on to Haad Rin. From Thong Sala the crossing to Haad Rin is typically around 30 minutes, depending on the vessel and the weather, according to travel guides.
  4. Take the taxi boat to Why Nam beach. About 10 to 15 minutes from the Haad Rin area. The taxi boat from Haad Rin costs 500 baht per person each way, paid in cash, and we can arrange your transfer for you. Fares can change with the season.
  5. Walk up to the villa. Our staff meet you at the boat and carry all your luggage, and any food deliveries, up to the villa and back down again. The way up is a short jungle path of about 5 minutes, uphill in places and uneven underfoot, so it is not step-free: wear sturdy shoes or sandals. If you have limited mobility, message us before you book.

Message us your ferry or arrival time when you book. We will help arrange the boat and meet you on the beach.

Ferries and speedboats from Koh Samui

  • The Haad Rin Queen ferry (200 baht, about 50 minutes) and a speedboat service (500 baht) run between Koh Samui and Haad Rin, where you continue by taxi boat or 4x4. The times are in the table below.
  • A scheduled speedboat runs from Koh Samui straight to Haad Thien beach, a 5 minute walk from the villa, twice a day for about 1,000 baht per person. Times can change with the weather, so check with us before you travel.
  • A private VIP speedboat goes whenever you like, including pick-up at Koh Samui Airport, and takes you directly to Why Nam beach for 9,000 baht one way. That price is for the whole boat, so it is the same whether one person or five travel.

We can also arrange an airport pickup for guests taking any of the public boats, for an extra 500 baht per booking.

Arriving after the last ferry, or leaving very early? The Baan Tai pier boat has later and earlier sailings. We can collect you from that boat and bring you all the way to the beach by truck or boat for 2,500 baht for the whole booking.

Is there a 4x4 route?

Yes. A four-wheel-drive can reach the beach through the jungle, but ordinary cars and mopeds cannot, and the boat is the main way in.

What to have with you

  • Cash for the boat and small expenses. There are no ATMs nearby, and most restaurants accept cards.
  • Groceries, if you want to cook. Food can be delivered to the villa from any restaurant on the three beaches (Why Nam, Haad Thien and Haad Yuan), so you can eat well without cooking. There is also a restaurant on Why Nam beach below the villa, and the nearest mini-mart is about a 10 minute walk away. If you want to stock the kitchen, buy groceries in Haad Rin before the boat.
  • Sandals or sturdy shoes for the jungle path.
