Getting to a boat access only beach on Koh Phangan

No road to the door is the point. Here is how arrival works, step by step.

To reach Why Nam Villa you take a taxi boat (or a 4x4 through the jungle) to Why Nam beach on Koh Phangan, where our staff meet you and carry your bags the short walk up the jungle path to the villa. Cars and mopeds cannot reach it, there are no ATMs nearby (the nearest mini-mart is about a 10 minute walk away), and you should bring cash.

The short version

  1. Reach Why Nam beach by taxi boat (the main way) or by 4-wheel drive through the jungle.
  2. Our staff meet you on the beach and carry your bags.
  3. Walk the established jungle path, about 5 minutes, up to the villa.

The house is not accessible by car or moped. Please plan to travel light-ish and wear shoes you can walk in.

The walk up to the villa

Our staff meet you at the boat and carry all your luggage, and any food deliveries, up to the villa and back down again. The way up is a short jungle path of about 5 minutes, uphill in places and uneven underfoot, so it is not step-free: wear sturdy shoes or sandals. If you have limited mobility, message us before you book. Guests who travelled with two backpacks describe the walk as simple, even in flip-flops.

Taxi boat

Access to the beach is primarily by taxi boat. Tell us your arrival day and approximate time when you book so we can arrange to meet you on the beach.

4x4 through the jungle

The alternative is a four-wheel-drive through the jungle. Standard cars and mopeds cannot make this route.

Ferries and speedboats from Koh Samui

  • The Haad Rin Queen ferry (200 baht, about 50 minutes) and a speedboat service (500 baht) run between Koh Samui and Haad Rin, where you continue by taxi boat or 4x4. The times are in the table below.
  • A scheduled speedboat runs from Koh Samui straight to Haad Thien beach, a 5 minute walk from the villa, twice a day for about 1,000 baht per person. Times can change with the weather, so check with us before you travel.
  • A private VIP speedboat goes whenever you like, including pick-up at Koh Samui Airport, and takes you directly to Why Nam beach for 9,000 baht one way. That price is for the whole boat, so it is the same whether one person or five travel.

We can also arrange an airport pickup for guests taking any of the public boats, for an extra 500 baht per booking.

Arriving after the last ferry, or leaving very early? The Baan Tai pier boat has later and earlier sailings. We can collect you from that boat and bring you all the way to the beach by truck or boat for 2,500 baht for the whole booking.

Getting to Koh Phangan first

Most visitors reach Koh Phangan by ferry from Koh Samui, Koh Tao or Surat Thani on the mainland. Koh Samui and Surat Thani both have airports. Ferries arrive mainly at Thong Sala, and some services run to Haad Rin; the Thong Sala to Haad Rin crossing is typically around 30 minutes, depending on the vessel and the weather (12Go lists current sailings). Tell us your ferry and arrival time and we will help you plan the last leg to the villa.

For the final boat from the Haad Rin area, guides report crossings of roughly 10 to 15 minutes. The taxi boat from Haad Rin costs 500 baht per person each way, paid in cash, and we can arrange your transfer for you. Fares can change with the season.

What to bring

  • Food. Food can be delivered to the villa from any restaurant on the three beaches (Why Nam, Haad Thien and Haad Yuan), so you can eat well without cooking. There is also a restaurant on Why Nam beach below the villa, and the nearest mini-mart is about a 10 minute walk away. If you want to stock the kitchen, buy groceries in Haad Rin before the boat. The kitchen is fully equipped if you do want to cook.
  • Cash. There are no banks or ATMs nearby, so bring cash for the boat ride and small expenses. Most restaurants accept cards.
  • A phone with data. The villa has Wi-Fi, and 4G/5G works as a backup.
  • Insect repellent and a torch. It is the jungle, after all.
  • Walking shoes or sandals for the jungle paths to the beaches.

Who should think twice

Our home is not suitable for children, and it is not a good fit if you have limited mobility, need step-free access, or want a car at the door or shops on hand. A couple of friendly geckos share the villa and keep the mosquitoes down. It is the jungle, so keep food sealed because monkeys can be curious, but there is nothing to be afraid of. We would rather you know before booking.
